The 5-axis air frame machining sample is an undergraduate student project where the basics of 5-axis machining operations are experienced. Both standard 3-axis and 5-axis roughing operations can be applied, followed by 5-axis swarfing operations and floor finishing. Custom fixturing for the outer-most swarf operation is also needed, which requires balancing strong clamping force with adequate tool access around the parts border. A large scale and half scale air frame were completed as well as a titanium version of the sample in order to learn of the affects of scaling tooling and working with difficult-to-machine materials.
